Darchen is a small village situated right in front of the sacred mountain Kailash and is the starting point for pilgrimages in the region.
MOUNT KAILASH KORA
Mt. Kailash, which is known in Tibetan as Kang Rinpoche – the Precious Jewel of Snows – , is considered by Buddhists to be the abode of the deity Chakrasamvara. It is said that if one does 108 circumambulations, one will reach enlightenment. The great Tibetan poet-saint Milarepa once declared, “There is no place more powerful for practice, more blessed, or more marvelous than this” Mt Kailash is considered holy by Hindus, Buddhists and Jains. In ancient texts, it is referred to as the center of the world. The reason can be understood from the geographical significance of its place: within 30 mi (48 km) radius, are the sources of mighty rivers Indus (north called “Sindhu” in India), Sutlej (in west), Brahmaputra (Yarlung Tsang-po in east), and Karnali (largest tributary to the Ganges in south). Hindus regard the peak as Shiva’s symbolic ‘Lingam’ and worship Mt Kailash, which is the Sanskrit name for the mountain. Bonpos believe the sacred mountain to be the place where the founder of the Bon religion landed when he descended from the sky. Tibetan Buddhists believe Kang Rinpoche to be a natural mandala representing the Buddhist cosmology on the earth. Jains believe that this is the place where their religion’s founder was spiritually awakened.
Pilgrims take circumambulation of the sacred mountain and it usually takes three days.

Darchen is located 1209 km west of Lhasa, around 19 hours driving. Usually travelers spend one night in Shigatse and one in Saga before reaching Darchen { Lhasa – Shigatse: km 275, 5 hrs 15 minutes > Shigatse – Saga: km 449, 7 hrs 40 minutes > Saga – Darchen: km 484, 6 hrs 20 minutes}.
Darchen is located about 200 km from Gunsa Airport of Ngari, which opened 1 July 2010 is located, offering flights twice a week to Lhasa and Chengdu. It takes around 2 hrs and 30 minutes to reach Darchen from Gunsa airport.

Qiu Monastery is 33 kilometres south of Darchen, on the northwestern shore of Lake Manasarovar. The main chapel here contains the medication cave of Guru Rinpoche, who is said to have passed away here, but most people focus on the views of Lake Manasarovar, the winding stone staircases and old wooden doorframes of this fairytale-like structure. A short kora path leads to a second chapel. On a clear day Mt Kailash looms dramatically to the north.
For a hike, walk along the ridge to the southeast of Chiu Monastery or take a halfday trek along part of the Lake Manasarovar kora to the ruined chorten and prayer wall at Cherkip, returning via the shoreline cave retreats. There are fine views and lots of nesting birds along this route.
